J Dilla

20 12 2009

James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006)

Dilla is one my personal favorite hip hop producer… His influence on the music world is obvious. His raw style and distinct drum programing has made him one of the most loved, respected and mimicked producers of our time.
Dilla has had such a strong impact on me and the way I make music that his name itself has become an adjective in my vocabulary.
“..Dilla that up” will be heard in my lab when the drums don’t have the swagger I want or the raw edge isn’t there.
Coming to the end of 2009 Dilla’s legacy is set in stone with countless “Dillaciples” keeping his memory alive as they take his enormous influence and it let inspire a whole new era of music. Long Live J Dilla…..

DJ RHETTMATIC JOINS THE PARTY!

Hello Party People!

Your boy Cocoe here dropping a little December love on ya’ll.
First off I hope everyone is doing well and ready for a New Year with a whole lotta new chapters.

I want to thank everyone that made it out to the last MIXUP!….

This party just keeps getting better & better every time.

Last month my man Santos came through and got down with us. Thank you very much bro for doing your thing. Had a blast. Jud Nester and the Abstract Workshop Collective pretty much made it happen and did it twice as nice. All the way live and funky as hell! Big ups to everyone that sat in on the mic. Hyder, Scotty, Josh and myself did our things as usual and seriously are thankful for these wonderful nights when we get to do what we love. Making people dance and smile is pretty much the greatest feeling ever!

This month we welcome one of our favorite Dj’s and fellow home town hero DJ RHETTMATIC representing that BEAT JUNKIE SOUND we know and love. This cat has been a staple in the California Hip-Hop seen and has done his part both in the studio and on the turntables.

Also our house band THE ABSTRACT WORKSHOP COLLECTIVE will be in full swing with more special appearances and of course our resident DJ’s will hold it down once again as we celebrate our last party for 2009 and those lovely Hip-Hop Classic we love!

We will be celebrating our girl Candice Han’s B-Day.
Much love to all our December Babies.

See You on the Dance Floor!!!

Josh One

17 12 2009

For over ten years, DJ/Producer Josh One has found a way to separate himself from the rat race of cookie cutter producers. From the anthemic to the most eclectic riddims, you wont be able to label or categorize him. From his platinum remix of Nappy Roots “Po Folks” (Grammy nominated), to his own records like “Contemplation” and “Narrow Path”, Josh has always displayed his talents and gifts with his own distinct style ! With a keen ear for details and an inherent quality that helped him establish the highly influential collective, Abstract Workshop dating back to the mid 90’s with partners, Cocoe, Scott Coats and Jud Nester.

Earlier this year Josh One released another highly anticipated album, make sure you go and download Tolerance on iTunes now. It hosts a slew of diverse songs featuring brilliant artists and musicians such as Lateef The Truthspeaker (Latyrx), Uncle Imani (Pharcyde), Blu (Johnson & Jonson), Lili De La Mora (The Year Zero), Shenkar (Heroes, Shakti), Patrick Bailey (Rebirth, Breakestra, Bittersweet), Mount Cyanide (Camarillo Blues Triangle), Caleb Speir (Estelle, Macy Gray), Eighty (Jupiter Rising), Allensworth, Jud Nester (Abstract Workshop) Poet Name Life, Golden & Looga Man (Dutty Cup).
Josh laced us up with some goodies, here is a dubplate special featuring SEAN PAUL, and one of my favorite joints from the album featuring BLQSTRDST, LDM, and POET NAMED LIFE.
